Takamura Koun (1852-1934)
dated 1889
carved wood rooster: 20.0×20.0×32.0 hen:12.0×22.5×21.0
Although it was because of admiration towards realistic western art reproduction that Takamura, a Buddhist sculptor, began to regard sketching as important, Takamura's realism did not surpass pursuance of superficial similarity cultivated in Japan such as in depiction of birds and flowers done since the Edo period. This is why the subjects of his realistic works are mostly not humans but birds and animals. This piece has the highest degree of completion among Takamura’s birds and animals. Each feather is carved elaborately, wings, combs and legs are by various techniques expressing difference in material sense. Also, the eyes are by the technique of crystal eyes in Buddhist images. It is a masterpiece with extreme artisan technique.
