Announcement about the Result of the Medical Examination of Her Majesty the Empress (August 9, 2015)

Her Majesty the Empress today underwent coronary computed tomography angiography, or CT scan, at the University of Tokyo Hospital.

The angiography found organic stenosis due to atherosclerosis, or hardening of the arteries, in three places, two in one of the three coronary arteries and one in another. Fortunately, all three proved to be relatively mild, with no other severe organic stenosis found that could cause chest pain. However, 24-hour ambulatory electrocardiography the other day had revealed evident findings suggesting myocardial ischemia, indicating the possibility of functional stenosis in the coronary arteries.

For this reason, although for the time being Her Majesty the Empress will continue Her daily activities as before, She is asked to refrain from vigorous exercise that can induce coronary constrictions, and special consideration should be made not to burden Her with heavy stress, either mental or physical.

Her Majesty's condition will continue to be monitored carefully, and in the event of any changes in the symptoms of chest pain, She may be treated with medication, as considered appropriate.
