Public Acts
Public acts are those carried out by the Emperor in a public capacity, based on the Emperor’s status as a symbol.
The Emperor cares deeply about each and every citizen of Japan and carries out different “public acts.”
For example, when disasters such as earthquakes or typhoons happen, the Emperor sends words of sympathy. He also encourages people who are working hard for society and participates in events related to welfare, sports, and culture.
The Emperor and Empress sometimes travel abroad to build friendly relationships with other countries. During these visits, they meet with local people, visit facilities related to history, culture, industry, and education, and interact with the people involved.
Public acts include events such as the New Year’s Greeting on January 2nd and the Emperor’s Birthday Greeting on February 23rd. During these ceremonies, the Emperor receives congratulations from people gathered in the East Gardens of the Imperial Palace.
