Poppies
Tsuchida Bakusen (1887-1936)
Pair of hanging scrolls
dated 1929
exhibited in the 10th Teikoku Bijutsuin Tenrankai (Exhibition of Imperial Art Academy) in 1929
color on silk 161.0×106.2 each
From about 1928 when Bakusen changed his stage of presentation from Kokugasosaku Kyokai after its disperse, to the governmental exhibition, his painting style began to change greatly becoming decorative with harmony between clear lines and beautiful colors. This is his representative work of this turning point, depicting poppies that he was strongly attached to for a long time. Fusion between modem creative attitude based on actual sketching and traditional decorative painting manner learned from old Chinese and Japanese paintings became his most important theme.
