Their Majesties the Emperor and Empress each year make appearances in the Tokyo Metropolitan Area at ceremonies such as Memorial Ceremony for the War Dead, which is held on August 15.

As Honorary President of Japanese Red Cross Society, Her Majesty the Empress makes  appearances at the National Red Cross Convention and the Florence Nightingale  Medal Awards Ceremony.

Some Facts
Each year Their Majesties offer silent prayers on August 15, which is the anniversary of the end of World War II, on August 6 and 9, which are the days atomic bombs were dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki, and on June 23, which is the day the Battle of Okinawa ended.

Their Majesties make appearances at the award ceremony of the International Prize for Biology. The prize is awarded to those who made significant contributions in biology.
