Masterpieces and Conversation Pieces in the Governmental Exhibitions

The Museum of the Imperial Collections, Sannomaru Shozokan has systematically introduced our Meiji era Paintings in the “Reappraisal of Meiji Art” series of 5 exhibitions from 1995-2001, but we have not had the opportunity to show our Nihonga (Japanese Paintings) and Oil paintings (western paintings) from the Taisho to early Showa periods.

Thereby, we are now introducing selected paintings of the Taisho to early Showa periods within our collection in this exhibition titled “Masterpieces and Conversation Pieces in the Governmental Exhibitions”. All of the pieces selected were exhibited and received high appraisal or were topics of conversation in governmental art exhibitions called either the Mombusho Bijutsu Tenrankai (Bunten, Ministry of Education Art Exhibition), or the Teikoku Bijutsu-in Tenrankai (Teiten, Exhibition of the Imperial Academy of Fine Arts) which Succeeded the former. They were ranked as Incentive purchased Pieces during the Tokyo exhibition (these exhibitions often travel to various other Places), and were added to the Imperial Court collection, and passed down to the present day.

Furthermore, we will also show the various craftworks that were exhibited in these governmental exhibitions.

We hope our visitors win be able to experience the essence of Modern Japanese Art selected by the Imperial Court of the time, and succeeded by our Museum.
