The Royal Danish Porcelain

Royal Copenhagen porcelain are the Pride of Denmark, and are widely known as high quality porcelain representative of Scandinavia, connected with the Danish Court since 1775 when manufacturing began under the joint management of the Royal family.

The “Flora Danica” referred to as the most elegant table art in the world, was created in 1790 when the company was under court management, and acted to acquire an established position for the Royal Copenhagen among Western European ceramic history. The existing original pieces created unti1 1803 are still kept as treasures of Denmark within the palace in Copenhagen.

Even after being separated from the court management, the Royal Copenhagen Porcelain Manufactory continued to create superior pieces under the patronage of the Danish Court. Among them, the “blue fluted”  pieces with glossy flower designs oh a clear white ground created when  Arnold Krog was the art director from the end of the 19th century to early 20th century, and the many pieces influenced by Japanese art and crafts,  caused the name Royal Copenhagen to became famous world-wide. These precious original pieces are within the collection of the Royal Copenhagen Museum, and continue to fascinate visitors.

This exhibition introduces two groups of historical masterpieces from the end of the 18th century to the beginning of the 20th century, which can be called the essence of beauty produced by Denmark.

We hope this exhibition will be a chance for the Japanese to deepen there understanding towards Danish culture, and also to deepen the relationship between Japan and Denmark.
