picture information
Sacred Mountains at the Morning Sun
Yokoyama Taikan(1868-1958)
Pair of six-fold screens
dated 1927
ink on paper 209.0×452.4 each screen
This was painted by the order of the Imperial Household to use at Homeiden State Banquet Hall. The beautiful form of Mt. Fuji among clouds was the painter's best specialty soundly depicted with moderate decorative effect. In contrast, the mountains of the right screen from the ranges of Mt. Hakone have surprisingly deep depth, depicted with rich sense of mass with a sketching attitude. This space created by the ingenious contrast is the best feature of this piece not seen in other Mt. Fuji paintings by Taikan.
